Are daycare and preschool the same, and do you need both?
Daycare and preschool are not the same, and in fact they are designed to serve two different purposes. A daycare is designed to provide childcare, usually while parents work and for many hours in a row. Preschool on the other hand is designed to introduce early education, and often meets for a short period of time, a day. Daycare is usually available 5 days a week, and preschool may be something a child only attends 2 to 5 days a week.
Yes there can be overlap, there are daycares that add in some preschool activities, and there are some preschools that choose to also provide childcare services. Often these crossovers are based around monetary decisions for the facility.
Both can work well to help with socializing, and learning to play with others, to share, and even to develop storytelling activity games (restaurant, grocery store, kitchen). And in fact there are many families that don't need child care, they do want their child to be in a learning environment though, and often preschool is not available in their community. Some families feel like they have to find a daycare, just to get some early learning in, or that they must tackle it on their own.
Thanks to the internet there are more options available to families, that have internet access at home, and a way to access it (tablet, laptop, computer, even a smartphone). From videos, to apps, to printables and more.
What many families are really looking for however is a preschool online, with a teacher, and a format, and some structure. That way they can supplement it with conversations or activities, right at home. And now in year two of a pandemic even more families are looking for a home solution.
Safe and happy travels!
