Learning is learning - birth to death. It's an ongoing progress, regardless of age, and many of the same tools work consistently.
What's something you hear consistently from folks like:
It's true and known, that kids actually thrive with consistency (and learn to push against it too, which is also a learning key) so let's break down what is consistency? Consistency boils down to being about repetition. It’s about doing the same things repeatedly, over time, to reach a goal.
We see this with our kids almost from birth. We say, mama, mama, mama - again and again, to achieve the goal of our little one saying mama as their first word.
This same concept is important in a pre-k, or preschool classroom but expanded. If your child goes every day, and every day they talk about colors. They are going to have the repetition to learn the colors. BUT while we are consistently talking about them, it needs to come up in both unpredictable, and predictable ways, to stay fresh, interesting, and to connect.
Blue is a crayon in the box, there are seven shades of blue on the wall and robin eggs too; green is the color of leaves, grass, and pine trees, and eggs. (Green Eggs and Ham)
Colors approached consistently becoming part of reading a story, drawing, and coloring a picture, sorting the shades, and tints, finding the difference, and the same, and so much more.
Repeating the lessons, again and again, creates those connections that are needed to learn new concepts, and then use and master them. Those repetitions, build a consistent experience of foundational learning and keep children engaged because they are building on what they know and seeing how it expands.
And here's our reminder as adults, we are always learning too, sometimes it's a remembering of something foundational, sometimes it's a building or rebuilding on a known foundation we have mastered. Be consistent in your learning too - because it's an amazing example for the other people in your life, including the early learners!
Safe and happy travels!
