We all know the value of reading to kids, and learning ABC's and sounds. Early literacy is crucial. But did you know that studies now show that early math skills, and what a student knows about math before they enter Kinder, is an even bigger predictor of long term success?
And what is scary is that studies also show that math isn't being taught in preschool programs.
I know, take a minute to let that sink in, not being taught. It seems almost unimaginable doesn't it? Yet studies show again, and again that it's not being taught, and if it is, it is just to memorize the counting of 1 to 10, or 20, or 50, or 100. Memorizing the number order is such a small part of math.
Think of it this way, if all we taught was to memorize the ABCs, would that be teaching early literacy? No, it wouldn't. It would leave out the sounds, the shape of letters, how to write them, rhymes, putting letters together to make new sounds and even word, and more.
Math is a key in learning how to organize things, logic, critical thinking, and more. A program needs to include math on a regular basis in both conversation and activities. Everything from shapes, and how many sides something has, to similar and different, more and less, adding and taking away/subtraction, above and below, combination, and identification of numbers even when out of sequence.
Math is a broad range and scope of work, and it's also the one thing that many people approach with the wrong words. Many adults use words like"
And kids are picking up on those signals too!
Math can be a part of nearly everything:
Honestly there is no excuse to not have math being included in preschool programs. If your child is in a program, how much math are they doing? And do you need to be supplementing that at home?
Odds are yes, yes you do.
Safe and happy travels!
