This is an interesting question that I am often asked. The reason is because of chatter in DC regarding the idea of offering universal preschool. Let me start by saying I think it's a great idea to have kids in preschool, and learning at an early age.
Obviously I am a fan of the concept and it's why I personally invested into the work.
But the people that are usually asking are the ones that are also in the preschool world, meaning they own centers, are teachers, or are considering getting into the work. And that for me tells of a very different question that they are really asking - their worth. Because they are very often asking from a place of "will we be replaced".
Let's unwrap some of this, if we can. Schools are currently overwhelmed across the country. From needing books and materials, to classrooms. Many of the schools that we have now fall into that place of "infrastructure" that is failing, from size of rooms to things like heat, ac, and leaking roofs. Head Start programs are overwhelmed, with a need that is bigger than they can meet. And teacher shortages are a real problem.
These are all areas of education that are currently funded, and available. The idea that private preschools aren't part of the solution now and in the future, I personally think is farfetched. Not to mention private schools (all ages) and homeschooling are threads that run through the current and future scenarios too.
Let's focus on now, and the very BIG need that we have in this country for education. Keep building skills and programs that are of value, and are helping prepare kids for success in Kindergarten and beyond.
And remember if you need a preschool program, online, a great resource center - check out Over The Bay Pre-K.
Safe and happy travels!
We know the key to success starts way before school, and Pre-K to the end of Third Grade is the significant foundation for learning success.
