![]() Many people have heard mixed messages about what to eat each day, or take as a supplement. Most know they should eat more vegetables and fiber and less junk food and soda. But some important things might confuse you. Scientists have found that everyone's digestive system is special, just like fingerprints. This is one reason why there isn't just one diet that works for everyone. When someone tells you that "this works for everybody" or that "all you need is this drink," you can remember that it's likely not true and is a red flag. In the United States, if someone is selling a quick fix and makes these claims, they might be breaking the law. It's important to know about your body before trying any cures you see online or hear about from friends or at church. Things like allergies, inflammation, and how your body absorbs certain vitamins can affect how you feel. That's why it's smart to talk to your doctor or a nutrition expert before starting something new. Another thing you might not know is that people with special training, like me as a group fitness instructor, have rules about what they can say about diet and nutrition. To keep their certification, they must keep learning, but they also need to stick to certain topics. This means they often can only talk about general ideas like the food pyramid, even if they know or believe other things. they can only share diets that are approved by the FDA, like the Mediterranean diet or the MIND diet. It's always best to talk to a trained nutrition expert or a doctor for advice on what to eat. When someone talks about diets, you should pay attention to any warning signs. Just because someone says something about a diet doesn't mean it's always good. It's important to check their qualifications and see where they got their information. Everyone's body is different and needs different things. For example, I started using turmeric, the spice, more often, but it made my liver hurt. Some people might say, "That's good! Your body is cleaning itself!" or ask, "Did you use black pepper with it?" What they don't mention is that turmeric can hurt some people's livers. Have you checked with a doctor about it? More and more people are having liver problems and injury from taking too much turmeric. Many don't realize that high doses can affect medications, how your body absorbs things, and even how your body makes bile. Turmeric is very popular as a health supplement and promises many benefits, but it doesn't work for everyone. Also, taking supplements is not the same as cooking with turmeric occasionally. We all know we should eat more fresh foods and vegetables. It's better to cook meals ourselves instead of just reheating pre-made ones. Don't underestimate what you already know. You might need help instead with planning meals, cooking, and cleaning up afterward, and we will talk more about that soon. Plus, cooking at home can help you save money instead of spending it on every new diet trend!
